Carnets: Part 1 & 2 with Eric Huyton of boomerang carnets—Staffordshire Showground, 20th February 2022
Eric Huyton of boomerang carnets® presented an introduction to the ATA Carnet customs document for the 4x4 Off Road community and spoke about using the ATA Carnet to Clear Customs with a vehicle when competing abroad. Eric began his introduction to ATA Carnets with the following:
“Post Brexit, we do need now to have these customs documents to get us into the country in the first place. The carnet is the first thing you’ve got to have, because if you don’t get into the country in the first place it’s actually going to be pretty impossible to get to the event, and that’s the reality of the situation. You can actually turn up at customs now, at the border, and they can actually say you’re not coming in, or charge you large sums of money, or impound your vehicle. So, they are the horror stories we are desperately trying to avoid, and you can do that with this document called an ATA Carnet.”
The ATA Carnet is an internationally accepted customs document for temporarily exported merchandise or goods. It allows cross border movement of those goods import-duty and -tax free into 87+ carnet countries and territories for up to a year. The ATA Carnet is known as the Merchandise Passport for boomerang freight® and ideal for professional equipment, goods for exhibitions, or commercial samples moving in and out of a country.
Henry Webster, a leading authority, and presenter for the Off Road Motorsports 4x4 community, summed up the presentation:
“This is an informative introduction to carnets for those planning to take their competition cars abroad. Whilst always a requirement for those entering competitions outside the EU, since Brexit it is now a requirement for all those taking their vehicles abroad. Eric Huyton from boomerang carnets gave two sessions explaining the requirements needed to complete the carnet application process. The first session was directed at those planning to enter French TT rallies, the second session focused on the requirements for RAID rallies.”
